MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

We've been busy preparing for Christmas. We had a great time at our field trip to the assisted living. We hope we blessed the residents as much as we were blessed. It was cute seeing some of the ladies wearing the ornaments that Anna Gracen and I made as bracelets.

The kids did a great job finishing up school and helping out around the house. They are excellent cookie bakers and tasters.

We had a family get together on Saturday and oh, yeah, the girls won!!!!! Finally the sweet smell of victory. The past 2 years the guys have beat us at 80's Trivia. This year we switched games - Outburst Revamped proved to be our game. I think it's because we never shut up. We were constantly yelling out answers even if they were the same ones we had already yelled out. It was a great afternoon filled with loads of fun and FOOD! Boy, did we have some yummy food - bacon wrapped tenderloin; Oreo truffles; meatballs; con queso dip & chips; spinach dip; cookies, candy; tenderloin and ham biscuits; cheese bread; brownie trifle; gingerbread house just to name some.

Yesterday I went shopping in Raleigh (at Crabtree) with my mama and aunt. What fun! There were SO many people. The trip was a success - found some gifts that I couldn't find around here.

Tonight we went over to my aunt and uncle's house for a pre-Christmas dinner. We feasted on pizza, salad, spaghetti and desserts; and then watched the Carolina Hurricanes play. They didn't win, but we still had a good time visiting and catching up with each other. Not to mention watching the kids play together.

I think I'm going to run out in the morning to a store or two to check out some things. No must- haves just some last minute pick up items. Then we'll be celebrating with my dad, stepmother and grandmother (brother and his family) tomorrow afternoon.

We'll be spending time together tomorrow night reflecting on Jesus' birth (and reading one of my favorite books "My Birthday, Jesus' Birthday" that Aunt Lillian gave the kids a few years ago). We're going to have a birthday party for Jesus.

I'll be taking a break from the computer for the next few days to enjoy Christmas with my family. I pray everyone has a blessed Merry Christmas and very prosperous and Happy New Year.

Lord, thank You for the wonderful gift of Jesus that You gave us. May we truly love Him as He loves us. May we celebrate Him every day by honoring Him with our thoughts, words and actions.

Christian's new career path

As mentioned in another post - Christian's career path has taken a turn. Up until the other day he was going to be a hockey player/archaeologist. He would concentrate on archaeology in his off season. Well he has now decided he wants to be an elf. Not just any elf, but one of Santa's elves. He has been very inquisitive about Santa this year. He knows that I have Santa's phone number. He asked when he would get Santa's number. I explained that you have to be a parent to have it. He followed that question with, "So, when I get to be a daddy I can call Santa and ask him if I can be one of his elves?" Then I had to explain that he didn't have to be a daddy in order to be an elf. He can call Santa when he gets older and put in an application. I asked Christian if being an elf pays well. He said they make $100 an hour (If it weren't for the long commute I might apply myself.) Wooten asked Christian if he could come and visit him. Christian said he would have to check on that with Santa. Then came the question of how come all the elves are short? I quickly explained that Santa must have some kind of special pixie type dust that makes the elves short. Santa would not discriminate against people of height. He is an equal opportunity employer. You know you just can't make this kind of good stuff up.

Check it out

Go to the Graham family blog to check out Christmas parade pics. Go to my sister-in-law, Jennifer's, blog for a cookie recipe exchange. She made some fantastic Monster Cookies that would be a great gift for family or friends this Christmas season. I shared a recipe for Chewy Cocoa Brownies with Chocolate Lover's Frosting. I always bring home an empty platter when I take them to church.

What have we been up to?

Well, by the lack of posts I guess you can tell a lot. Let's see if I can remember it all. There has been school - we'll be getting out for Christmas on Friday.
Last Sunday night was dress rehearsal for the Christmas program at church.
*Monday night we went to visit MeMa and PaPa.
*Tuesday night we went to visit Nana and Mr. Bobby and see Nana's Christmas tree. Very pretty!
*Wednesday night we had church (I had dance practice).
*Thursday morning we went to see Charlotte's Web. Our niece, Rebecca, played the goose. She and the other kids did a great job! It was a very rainy morning. One of those mornings where you don't want to get out of bed much less out of the house. The play was well worth it though!! We're proud of Rebecca!!!
*Friday, Anna Gracen and I went Christmas shopping - and boy did we ever. Friday night we had family movie night - Get Smart was very funny! We all laughed out loud sometimes to the point of missing dialogue - which meant a lot of going back and shhing as we tried to catch every funny line. Then we started watching Fred Claus. Maybe it's a good movie - I just couldn't get into it. It's definitely no ELF!! I tried to get my Christmas purchases together and put them in boxes which ended up with me running around the house like a chicken with my head cut off. I thought I had lost/misplaced/thrown away my nephew, Jacob's, Christmas present. I checked my gift closet - I rechecked my gift closet - I checked all other closets - I checked the garbage can - I checked under the bed and every other wild and outlandish place a bag could have been placed when I wasn't really paying attention to what I was doing. The next place I was going to look would be the cupboard or freezer. I decided to check the gift closet one more time - success! Not only did I find Jacob's present, but I also found another present that I had forgotten about. I then realized it was time to call it a day (only it wasn't Friday by now it was Saturday. I hate to call Saturday a day when it was just getting started.)
*Later Saturday consisted of cooking, catching up with friends, a family get together and birthday party, and a mad game of UNO. Then home with one extra child for the night (our nephew, Josh). Anna Gracen and I worked on crafts to take to the assisted living residents this week. Then I settled down with watching Jack Frost and signing Christmas cards to take to church today. Oh, wait, I forgot about making Oreo truffles for Wooten's Christmas party and oh, yeah, there was supper.
*Today started with dance practice at church followed with Christmas program practice. Which (thanks to the youth and their leftover pizza) was followed with lunch and set up for the Christmas party. Lunch was cooking in the crock pot while we were at church. Because the kids and I had filled up on pizza; there was definitely plenty of crock pot meatloaf for Tom. I made some brownies for the party and practiced the dance I learned this morning. Tonight was the long awaited Christmas program. The kids and puppets/puppeteers did an awesome job!! Lots of good music, laughs, sweetness and fun. After the program we partied!! Lots and lots of goodies and fellowship. We had a blast! The kids are worn out - the parents are worn out - great time celebrating Jesus!!

Lesson learned - better to update a little at a time instead of waiting to the end of the week. Coming soon: Christian's career path has taken a turn.....

Fun Christmas Music

My kids love "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas". It makes them laugh and sing along (except Wooten - he's too cool to sing along - teenagers!). I couldn't resist adding it to my playlist. It just might stick with you all day. It is that kind of song. Enjoy!!!

Baby makes the paper

Baby, the fox, I mentioned in my earlier post is famous. Okay, not famous, but he was mentioned in a newspaper article in Saturday's paper. Here is the article. Imagine my surprise to pick up the paper and read about Baby after I had just posted about him.

Christmas parade prep/surprise guest

We are getting geared up for the Christmas parade tomorrow. Getting out the warm clothes because the forecast is calling for very cool weather. It will be feeling a lot like Christmas.

The first two songs on my playlist are the songs we (the church dance team will dance to) - "When I Speak Your Name" and "Made Me Glad". They are beautiful. Speaking of beautiful the float is fantastic!! I'll either post some pics or post a link to them.

Anna Gracen and I went to work on the float this afternoon and then went shopping. A little Christmas shopping; a little birthday shopping (my grandmother and sister-in-law); a little going away shopping (our friend from church, BJ, is joining the Navy); and a lot of browsing. When we returned home this evening we saw a surprise guest in our side yard. No, not Santa or even a reindeer or two. Instead we saw a fox. He was stunning. We are used to seeing foxes (I think foxes sounds funny. I think the plural should just be fox.) in my grandmother, Mimi's, backyard. She has at least two who come by every night for dinner. We have named one, Baby. We think the original Baby has passed on. He used to come up and sit at my Mimi's backdoor and wait for her to bring food out. She has one who still comes up in her yard and eats right there for us to see. The other one grabs his food and takes it out of our sight. I thought the kids would be thrilled to see a "Baby" at our house. All three said, "I hope that fox leaves. He needs to go to Mimi's house, not ours." Funny how we all love to see Baby at Mimi's, but weren't so sure about having "him" over here. Better him than an opossum (yuk!). We once also had a pig visit. We just never know who/what may grace our yard. I'm keeping my eyes open for Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and of course, Rudolph.

It's Christmas time

I don't want to hear any Christmas music until after Thanksgiving, but I'll watch a good Christmas movie anytime. Boy are there lots on TV these days. We have Fa, La, La, Lifetime; the Hallmark channel and ABC Family - movie after movie - how great!

I am one of those people who gets out before the sun rises on Black Friday and waits for store after store to open. I look forward to this day every year. This year was a little different. My partners in crime (Laura and Jill) were both out of town, so I hit the stores on my own. The day was a success. I always know when it's time to go home - when I start buying for myself.

The kids were anxious to get the house decorated. After we all had a turkey sandwich (one of my favorite things about Thanksgiving - LEFTOVERS!!!) we brought down the Christmas decorations. Anna Gracen and Christian were a big help with decorating (Tom and Wooten not so much). By Sunday it looked like Christmas at the Dougherty house. The tree is up and decorated; all the snowmen are out; the Christmas village is set up; the nutcrackers are out; and the outside is all lit up (not like the Griswald's though).

The Christmas festivities have started. Today was Jr. Boys' Club with our home school group. Anna Gracen & Christian were once again my little helpers (I'm so blessed). The little dudes made ornaments; had a surprise visit from Mrs. Claus; had Christmas goodies; played a game and went home with candy canes and suckers. Don't you know the Moms loved that? Sugar them up and send them home. I came home; made a batch of homemade brownies and made my self a little more presentable (in other words I took a shower). Then off to the Christmas party for the ladies at church. What fun! We do the gift exchange game which is a trip. You have some who won't take a gift away from anyone and others who LOVE taking gifts. We laughed, ate, and laughed and ate some more.

Our next Christmas activities:

  • Help decorate the Christmas tree at church.
  • Help decorate the float for the Christmas parade.
  • The kids are riding on the church float in the Christmas parade on Saturday. I'll be one of the dancers dancing behind the float.
  • December field trip to an assisted living home to visit, sing and pass out gifts.
  • Church Christmas program
  • Christmas baking...YUM!!!

It's cooollllddddddd outside....

Okay, what happened to fall? It is 22 degrees outside on November 22 in North Carolina. What is up? We're planning on doing some yard work today. Hope we can thaw out afterwards. Tom will be making his famous stew to help warm us up.

We're having a discussion about Christmas music. Don't get me wrong I love Christmas, but I love Thanksgiving, also. I will decorate, listen to Christmas music and, of course, shop the day after Thanksgiving. Until then, it's all about Thanksgiving. It is pretty awesome how the two go together - we are thankful to God for Jesus coming to earth to save us. We are thankful every day!!

Have a wonderful weekend!! Stay warm!!!!

Our 16th Wedding Anniversary!

On November 21, 1992 we said, "I do". Then we blinked and 16 years went by. On our wedding video people predicted what we would be doing in 10 years. The general consensus - we would be living in a log home in the woods with lots of children and dogs. Well, we don't have any dogs (only cats) and I'm not sure 3 is considered a lot of children (even though they can sometimes make the noise of lots of children). Our house is homey but not made of logs or in the woods (there are woods behind our backyard).

No huge wedding cake to celebrate our anniversary, but Anna Gracen and I did make cupcakes with homemade buttercream icing.

16 things I love about Tom:

He is...

1. a man after God's heart
2. the spiritual leader of our household
3. my best friend
4. a great father
5. a wonderful provider
6. a kid at heart

His...

7. laugh
8. quick wit
9. smile
10. intelligence
11. work ethic
12. problem solving skills
13. grilling skills
14. hugs
15. kisses
16. I love the way he looks at me, encourages me and helps me to be a better Christian, mother, wife and person.

Happy Anniversary, Pete!!! (my pet name for Tom - "Sweet Pete").

Praise report...

Tricia received good news from the doctors today! Read more here. I cried as I read of God's faithfulness.

Be blessed!!!

Manicotti & football

For lunch yesterday, I wanted to give manicotti a try. Anna Gracen & Christian were excited to help out. They were a big help. Wooten & Tom were excited to try the final product. We had enough for lunch again today. It was yummy even leftover! Here's the recipe we used. I like it because you fill the shells uncooked. The kids did an awesome job. I think we'll be having this again soon.

After filling up on manicotti and finishing school we headed to Apex for the Wildcats' game. It was cold! Unfortunately the Wildcats' season ended last night. The support this team has is amazing. We are proud of all Bennett and the Wildcats accomplished this season! Go Wildcats!!

Field Trips

In honor of Veteran's Day last Tuesday, we went to a celebration at the courthouse. These kids came out on their day off from school to honor our veterans in song. They did an awesome job. The turnout was great. They said it was the biggest turnout ever - well over 400 people. You can read more about the celebration here. We go to church with the guest speaker, Heidi Brown.

Thursday was our field trip to The Wilson Daily Times. We had about 60 home school kids (along with their moms and a few dads) come out to learn all about our local paper. We were guided through all the steps of publishing a newspaper - starting in the newsroom and ending in the delivery pickup. The highlight of the trip was the actual printing press - the kids thought it was loud, but all were impressed with the speed in which it printed. My kids graciously posed in front of the sign for this pic.

In addition to these two field trips - Christian and Wooten had Boys' Club and Anna Gracen and I helped out with Jr. Boys' Club. No organized field trips this week, but we are headed to Apex this afternoon for West Johnston's playoff game (it was postponed from Friday because of the weather). Go Wildcats!!!!

Prayers

Prayers are needed for many in our community. A line of tornadoes tore through Wilson County and Johnston County early this morning. An 11-year old little boy, Josh Wiggins, was killed about a mile from our house. There were 43 homes damaged and 13 homes destroyed. You can read more here. There were just a few limbs down on our street. My aunt and uncle who live in the heart of Elm City lost part of their chimney, but luckily their house sustained no serious damage.

Please lift up those affected by this storm. Please pray for the clean up and healing that has started. This is all I can share right now. The reality is finally sinking in -

We are blessed!!!!

The Love Dare

The pivotal question Caleb (Kirk Cameron's character in Fireproof) asks: "How am I supposed to show love to somebody who constantly rejects me?" (I'm glad Jesus doesn't ask this question - He just loves us.) His father explains to him that we are to love as Christ loves us. He then challenges Caleb to a dare and sends him the book The Love Dare. Kathy mentioned the book in her comment about the movie. Here is a link for more information on the book. There is also a "Fireproof Your Marriage" curriculum available.

I overheard a woman say to her friend as they were leaving the movie Friday night, "You need to buy that movie when it comes out on DVD and give it to each of your sons." Spread the word about this movie. It has the potential to strengthen marriages as well as bring people to Jesus.

There is also an awesome soundtrack for the movie with songs from Casting Crowns and Third Day. Enjoy "While I'm Waiting" by John Waller.

Love this song

The newest addition to my play list is "Beautiful Life" by Fisher. Anna Gracen and I heard it on a commercial for Jon & Kate plus 8. We love it and say so every single time we hear it (which is quite often because we watch TLC a lot). In case you don't know about Jon and Kate or their plus 8 - they are the proud parents of two sets of multiples (twin girls and then sextuplets - 3 girls and 3 boys). We love watching their show (even Wooten and Christian enjoy it). Check it out Monday nights on TLC. Some other shows we like to watch together:
Little People, Big World
17 Kids and Counting (the Duggar family)
Ace of Cakes
Throwdown with Bobby Flay
Dancing with the Stars

Weekend Plans

The kids are going to the planetarium tomorrow with their MeMa, PaPa and cousins. What fun they will have. They spent the night over there tonight so Tom and I had a date night.

We went to the movies to see "Fireproof". Oh, my what a wonderful movie! Check out the trailer above. It is from the creators of "Facing the Giants" (another must see movie). Thank you, Kathy, for recommending the movie. A friend of mine at church also recommended it. Every couple needs to see this film. This movie isn't just entertainment it is enlightening.

West Johnston Wildcats lost tonight by 1 point - ugh! They finished the regular season 8-3, pretty awesome record. They take on Garner next week in the playoffs. Great job, Coach Jones!! We are so proud of all you have accomplished on and off the field. When I found out Bennett and his wife, Jennifer, were expecting a baby girl I told them she would be like the little girl in "Remember the Titans". At four years old, Sydney is so much that little girl. She informed me tonight that tomorrow is "stay at home day" with pancakes and family time. What a great way to regroup after a tough night of football.

Have a blessed weekend!!

Changes

As you can see I'm in the process of making some changes to the blog. I say process because I will be doing a little at a time. So the changes you see now will have to do for now.

Fall is here...

even though it is unseasonably warm here in NC. Fall is definitely here. One of my favorite things is seeing the leaves take on their new colors. One of my not so favorite things is raking up those same said leaves as they take over my yard. There is a sense of accomplishment, as brief as it may be, when the yard is leaf free. Then a quick overview of the unchanged leaves still in the Bradford pear trees, reminds me just how short lived the sense of accomplishment is.

Praise God that we have a yard to rake. Praise God that we have the arms, legs and energy to rake. Praise God for changing the colors of the leaves and for changing our hearts towards Him. As you enjoy the beauty of fall - fall in love with the One who created that beauty - Your Creator. Fall in love with Jesus all over again or for the very first time. Know that He is there to catch you when you fall.

Again I say, "Fear Not"

Yesterday I fasted TV. I fasted because I did not want to hear all the commentaries on the election. I know me and I know that by hearing all day long fear would set in. Instead I chose to listen to the voice of My Creator, My Father.

As I was preparing dinner, I started singing a song. Not a song I had heard before, but a song rising up from my heart. Here are the words I sang -
"Fear not, my child, for I Am always near. Fear not, my child, for I Am always here. I will never leave you or forsake you. For I know the plans I have for you so fear not."

Upon awaking just a short time ago (those who know me will be shocked to learn I went to bed at 9:46 pm), I turned on the TV. It took less than 30 seconds to find out the results of the Presidential election. I then came over to the computer to check on the North Carolina results. I can tell you in all honesty there is no fear in me. I will continue to lift this country and our leaders up in prayer. Because (as a friend from our home school group put it) no matter who the President is - God is still King! I have decided to continue my fast from all the commentaries - no looking back - I have my eyes on the prize, Jesus. I look upon the hills where my Help comes from.

Be encouraged - here is the original "Fear not" post:

I heard in a sermon once that the phrase "fear not" is in the Bible 365 times. That is one "fear not" for each day of the year. In doing a search on Bible Gateway, I couldn't find it that many times; however, the point is "fear not" is mentioned over and over again in the Word of God. Let us hold on to the promises of God and "fear not". He is in control of ALL circumstances and absolutely NOTHING catches Him by surprise.

the economy - FEAR NOT
the Presidential election - FEAR NOT
the report from the doctor - FEAR NOT
all cares and concerns - FEAR NOT

I am sensing a spirit of fear in this country. I hear people speaking out of fear. The Word of God tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."

If you feel that fear - speak against it using the Word of God. Renew your mind daily with God's Word.

Romans 12:1-2 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

Walk in spirit and in truth!!!

John 4:23-24 23 "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Whom shall I fear? Whom shall I fear? For I am YOURS!

By Your Side

I heard this song on the radio the other day and immediately added it to my playlist. Here are the lyrics. He is by your side!

By Your Side by Tenth Avenue North

Why are you striving these days
Why are you trying to earn grace
Why are you crying
Let me lift up your face
Just don't turn away
Why are you looking for love
Why are you still searching as if I'm not enough
To where will you go child
Tell me where will you run
To where will you run

Chorus:
And I'll be by your side
Wherever you fall
In the dead of night
Whenever you call
And please don't fight
These hands that are holding you
My hands are holding you

Look at these hands and my side
They swallowed the grave on that night
When I drank the world's sin
So I could carry you in
And give you life
I want to give you life
(Chorus 2x)
Cause I, I love you
I want you to know
That I, I love you
I'll never let you go
(Chorus 2x)

Time to command

I received this in an e-mail and wanted to share.

Top 10 Predictions No Matter Who Wins the Election

1. The Bible will still have all the answers.
2. Prayer will still work.
3. The Holy Spirit will still move.
4. God will still inhabit the praises of His people.
5. There will still be God-anointed preaching.
6. There will still be singing of praise to God.
7. God will still pour out blessings upon His people.
8. There will still be room at the Cross.
9. Jesus will still love you.
10. Jesus will still save the lost.
ISN'T IT GREAT TO KNOW WHO IS STILL IN CONTROL?!!!!

I received another e-mail where I read that we need to stop whining, weeping and begging God - we need to command.

"I command that God's Will be done in this nation. I command that God's Will be done on this earth as it is in Heaven. (Not my will, mind you - His Will!) We need to command that eyes be opened to see God's truth." I shared this with the kids and asked "Who can argue with that?" Christian spoke up and said, "There's no arguing with that." Out of the mouth of babes.

Command God's Will be done today and every day!

Jesus Jubilee

As predicted, Jesus Jubilee was a lot of fun. Wooten won the costume contest for the 9 and up age group. He looks soooo cool!! He had an earpiece, finger microphone, a badge and a hand-held metal detector (from a kit that he and Tom put together).
I dressed up as "static cling" which is why my hair looks, oh, so lovely. Unfortunately, Tom had to go to work early and was only able to grab a quick dinner. He did dress up for his dinner though. He was "Joe the Plumber".

Christian won the costume contest for the 6-8 year old age group. Shiver me timbers - what a handsome pirate.
Anna Gracen was a beautiful fairy. She glittered, sparkled, and fluttered all around the church!!
They played games, stocked up on candy, went on a hayride and ended the night with sleepovers. Lindsey came home with Anna Gracen; Christian went home with Charlie; and Wooten went over to Chandler's house.

This is the day...

that the Lord has made - we will rejoice and be glad in it. Tonight we will be celebrating Jesus Jubilee at church. The kids are excited about dressing up. Wooten is going as a secret service agent. Anna Gracen is going as a fairy and Christian is going as a pirate. Nana got Anna Gracen and Christian the cutest costumes from Cracker Barrel. Thank you, Nana!! They love them! I'll post pics tomorrow.

Jesus Jubilee consists of a hot dog dinner, a costume contest, lots of games and candy, a cupcake walk and a hay ride. Last year Tom and I won the adult costume contest - I was a Carolina Hurricane hockey player and Tom was a Hurricane fan. Anna Gracen won in her age group - she was a colonial girl - too cute. I had thought of dressing up as Sarah Palin tonight (with Wooten as my security) but my hair is too short. I might dress up like static cling (wear all black and pin dryer sheets and clothes to me). Whatever I decide, I know we'll have a good time.

Unfortunately, we'll miss the Wildcats last home game of the regular season against Smithfield Selma. Fortunately, I have contacts who will call me and keep me updated on the score. GO WILDCATS!!!!!!

Happy Birthday to Jill (Tom's cousin) and Rebecca (our niece) today! Hope they each have a wonderful birthday!!!

John McCain Rally

The following are pictures I took from the John McCain "Road to Victory" Rally yesterday in Fayetteville, NC. This is an important election for our country. Look at the truth, look at character, look at the views and values of the candidates. Pray and vote. My choice for America is Senator John McCain and running mate, Governor Sarah Palin. I believe his values are in line with my values. I base my values not on party, but on God's Word. We are not defined by our party affiliation or race - what defines who we are is our character. Whose character do we follow? As Christians we follow Jesus.

No matter what the outcome is in this election - I will continue to pray for our country and those in leadership. The lack of respect for the leaders of this country is most disappointing. Instead of complaining - pray. Let us remember that God is in control!

Senator John McCain as he shook Wooten's hand. I was taken by Senator John McCain's humility. He has served our country since the age of 17 when he joined the Navy. His arms have limited movement because of the torture he endured as a POW. He is proud to be an American and will continue to fight for our country.

Hank Williams, Jr. was on hand to entertain the crowds - and entertain he did.

Here are some inventive Americans being creative with the thunderstix that were passed out.

Here's Wooten before the rally started. This shows how close we were to the podium. We had God's favor in being able to stand this close. We arrived at the Crown Center at 11 am (4th and 5th in line on the East side). The doors opened at 2 pm. We made friends while standing in line and ended up going down to the floor with those friends. We were all excited to be this close. The long wait paid off.

Wooten said, "This was a once in a lifetime opportunity." As much as I enjoyed seeing all that we saw and hearing all that we heard, what I enjoyed most was spending time with Wooten and seeing his excitement.

Happy Tuesday!

Well, the Wildcats lost their game last night (38-27). I know they are disappointed, but I bet they'll be ready for Friday night's game against Smithfield Selma. A 10-1 record for the season sounds good - not to mention what they can accomplish in the playoffs.

Wooten and I will be heading to Fayetteville for a John McCain rally in a little while. It should be interesting. I'm looking forward to spending some one-on-one time with Wooten. All three kids doubled up on their schoolwork yesterday. Anna Gracen and Christian are going to enjoy not having school today and having some Daddy time.

I hope to get some good pictures to post tomorrow. Have a great Tuesday!!!

Wildcats Squared

The West Johnston Wildcats did not play last night. The game was postponed until Monday night because of weather. They face Knightdale (3-5 for the season). Go Wildcats!!

Anna Gracen, Christian and I went to the first showing of High School Musical 3: Senior Year yesterday afternoon. There were a lot of people in that theater! We ended up sitting in the second row which was great because I didn't even have to wear my glasses. When the movie started Zac Efron's (Troy) sweaty face filled the screen (he was playing basketball for the East High Wildcats). I kidded with Anna Gracen that we were so close to him that I could smell his sweat.

HSM is a GREAT movie!! It's nice to see a musical with talented kids that's rated G (unlike one of my childhood favorites Grease - talk about mature themes). The music makes you want to get up and dance (if it weren't for my ankle and the fact that my kids would have died of embarrassment I would have). The choreography is awesome! Here's a clip of one of my favorite dance scenes. Needless to say, but I'll say it anyway - we highly recommend this movie. The funniest thing to me - in one scene Troy feeds Gabriella a strawberry. She takes a bite and then he eats the rest of it. The kids in the theater joined in a collective "Yuck". It took me awhile to figure out what had disgusted them so. I guess the whole cootie thing and them sharing food was more than the kids could handle. The theater was eerily quiet when Troy and Gabriella shared a simple kiss - I didn't look, but I'm guessing there were lots of little hands over little eyes. The smiles on the faces of all those leaving the theater was priceless - not to mention the excitement on the faces of those entering the theater.

I'm still here...I think

Just kidding - I'm still here. I just haven't felt like blogging - I know, I know, check my head for a fever something MUST be wrong. No, nothing's wrong - well..... Christian is getting over a cold (he hates being under the weather). I did something - sprained, fractured, twisted - my ankle last Friday. Oh my, it's been a week (and it's still sore). I wish I had a video of how I hurt it - I'm sure I'd win $10,000 from America's Funniest Videos. I decided to try croc surfing under my carport - I wiped out! (More like I was walking up to the door and slid down on the slippery pavement. Just doesn't sound quite as adventurous.) I immediately started crying like a baby. Christian just stood there in disbelief. You should hear his imitation of me asking him to go get Tom. It is priceless.

Anna Gracen and I have really gotten into "Dancing with the Stars". We called in and voted this past week. Of course we don't have just one couple we're pulling for - we voted for 4! (Lance & Lacy; Warren & Kym; Cody & Julianne; Maurice & Cheryl). Luckily they all are safe to dance this week. See all votes do count!

Wooten is heading off for a beach retreat tomorrow afternoon. He's going with the same group he went to camp with this summer. He's really looking forward to it. I know he'll have a great time!

Anna Gracen, Christian and I (Tom will be working) are planning on checking out "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" tomorrow night. The Wildcats are playing tomorrow night after having last week off. Because of Christian getting over a cold we won't be able to brave the cold rain that is predicted.

We're having a fish fry at church Sunday night. The men are doing the cooking. Should be fun!

Wooten and I are thinking of taking a road trip next Tuesday. Senator John McCain is going to be in Fayetteville, NC. We received a recorded phone message about it tonight. When I mentioned it to the kids, Wooten said he thought it would be interesting. What an awesome home school field trip. Think of all the teaching moments that would present themselves. Would make for an interesting post also.

I do have some prayer requests:

*Wooten, kids and adult leaders - middle school beach retreat
*Tricia and Nate
*Darby - for complete healing
*Our friend, David List and his family. He was given the report of intestinal cancer. Whose report will we believe? We believe God's report - total healing in Jesus' mighty name!

Do you know the muffin man?

I love muffins. Anna Gracen and I decided to try a new recipe - raisin bran muffins. I found the recipe on the Cooking with Amy blog. We liked that in addition to raisin bran you add chopped apple and walnuts. They are yummy! All three kids love them. Here is Christian reaching for one (or two).
It was Anna Gracen's idea to show what the inside of the muffin looks like.
This morning before church I put a meatloaf and potatoes in the crock pot. Wooten requested a meatloaf the other day. I searched online and found this recipe:
2 lbs. ground beef (I used a little more)
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 cup cracker crumbs (I also used a cup of Italian bread crumbs)
8 oz. tomato sauce
Small potatoes, cut up (leave skins on, so the potatoes don't turn dark)
1/2 cup chopped green pepper (I didn't have one so I omitted this)
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk
Mix all ingredients except potatoes. Shape into a loaf. Place in crock pot. Place potatoes around the sides. Cook on High for 4-6 hours.
When we got home from church it smelled wonderful. I cooked up some green beans and heated up some bread with butter and we were ready to chow down. It was a hit and oh so simple.
Anna Gracen wants to make a pineapple casserole and some sweet potato french fries to go along with the left over meatloaf for supper. She got the idea about the pineapple casserole from Nana who made several this weekend for a dinner. She got the idea about the sweet potato french fries from Wooten. He had some at Aunt Vicky's house and loved them! We better get to cooking!

Busy week

I didn't realize this week was going to be so busy.

Yesterday Christian went fishing with the home school group's Boys' Club. Wooten was a youth helper. 28 boys went out fishing on a hot, fall day. They had loads of fun. My hat is off to the moms that head that group up. Anna Gracen and Lindsey helped Mrs. Laura and myself with Jr. Boys' Club. The little dudes had a blast on a fall scavenger hunt that Laura designed. The theme was "Fall in Love with Jesus". They had to use a map and find craft items hidden around the playground. Then they used the items they found to make a craft. I wish I had pictures. They were too cute. A craft stick cross with a heart in the center attached to a rock with eyes (keep your eyes on the Rock of our salvation, Jesus).

Today the kids had appointments with the dentist. They all did very well. Wooten has the beginning of a cavity which will be fixed next week. Nana (my mama) works at the dentist office. She showed Wooten his x-rays that revealed at least two very loose teeth. Being the determined young man he is - he pulled one this afternoon.

Tomorrow morning we'll be heading to my Alma mater, Beddingfield High School, to see the play "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown". I'm excited to see how the school looks now. Oh, my, it has been 19 years since I was a student there. That is hard to believe - some days it seems like it was yesterday. I think most of the teachers I had when I was there have retired - a clue that it's been almost 20 years since I was a Beddingfield Bruin. We're looking forward to the production.

Prayer Request

Please lift up Tricia, Nate and Gwyneth Rose in your prayers. Tricia's recent PET scan showed that the treatments she has been undergoing has had little affect on her cancer. You can read more here.

Lord, we believe Your report. We pray for healing to manifest in Tricia's body. Let the doctors see a miracle. Let them see Your hand on Tricia. You are bigger than any cancer - You are bigger than any problem. Lord, let the cancer be gone, out of her body in Jesus' name. We praise You for You are worthy to be praised. Father, encourage Tricia and Nate - may Your peace cover and surround them. May they hear Your voice, feel Your arms and sense Your presence. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen and Amen!

Cabinet

Since my last post I've had a volunteer for one of the cabinet positions. Here are my picks for my cabinet.

VP - Of course would be my hubby, Tom.

Secretary of Agriculture - I'd have two - my grandparents - Mammy and Papa know all about growing a plentiful garden.

Secretary of Interior - This position would have to go to Betty (my mother-in-law). She has a gift for decorating. She can do wonders with any interior.

Secretary of Commerce - My step mother, Kay, would handle this position. She is good at shopping.

Secretary of Justice -My boy, Wooten, would get this title. He knows how to make sure justice is served - just ask his brother and sister.

Secretary of Defense - This was a no brainer - with the defense West Johnston has - my brother, Bennett, gets this job.

Secretary of Labor - This position goes to someone who knows all about labor - childbirth and hard work. My mama would take over this position.

Secretary of Education - My sister-in-law (Tom's little sis), Jennifer, would be great at this job. She has a degree in education, is a born teacher, picks out great books and has neat teacher's handwriting.

Secretary of State - Oh, my father-in-law, Bill, would be a sure fire pick for this office. He has a lot of knowledge and according to the grand kids - is never wrong.

Secretary of Energy - Hands down this job goes to Christian. That boy has loads of energy.

Secretary of Transportation - I figured my brother-in-law, Ronnie, would be a good choice here. He knows a lot about cars and he is a cyclist.

Secretary of Health and Human Resources - This was an easy pick. Co-secretaries - My sister-in-law, (Bennett's wife) Jennifer, works in Human Resources in a hospital. My aunt, Vicky, is a pharmacist who works in a hospital and is married to a chiropractor.

Secretary of Treasury - My daddy has already volunteered for this job. Since he has years of experience working in the banking business (not to mention being my daddy and funding me through high school, my continuing education and my wedding) he should be a good choice.

Secretary of Homeland Security - My brother, Brad (or Tiny as he is known to his friends), would be a wonderful choice for this position. Nobody wants to mess with Brad.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs - This is a two man job. My brother-in-law, Matt and my uncle, Paul since they are both Marines. Once a Marine always a Marine.

Secretary of Housing and Urban Development - My grandmother, Mimi, she is all about helping those in need.

Cabinet Rank Members

Chief of Staff - That would have to be Anna Gracen - my right hand girl. She would love being chief of the staff and tell others what to do (she's great at that just ask her brothers).

National Drug Control Policy - My sister-in-law, Colleen, because she is a substance abuse counselor.

There are a few offices left. I may have to recruit my nieces and nephews. Nepotism is alive and well in my cabinet.

Wildcat Videos and Photos

This photo of CJ Fredrick comes from WRAL's website. Check out the story here. This kid "dances" on the field. That is exactly what it looks like when you see him move. There are similarities between dancing and football. On "Dancing with the Stars" the football players do very well. Emmitt Smith won; Jason Taylor reached the finals and Warren Sapp is one of my favorites this season. Check out CJ's moves here. News 14 has a video you can see here (Wildcat story is featured - 5:10 on the timer).

There are some great photos from last night's game and Homecoming festivities on the News and Observer site here.
Way to go Wildcats!!!!

WILDCATS IN THE HOUSE!!!!

Wildcats 34; Clayton 14

8 and 0!!!! The Wildcats played GREAT!! The referees loved calling penalties on them though. The penalties were definitely one sided. But they prevailed!!

Unfortunately, I forgot to take the camera to the game tonight. Fortunately, I did remember to take the football rice krispie treats. Mama baked cookies; put them in cellophane bags and tied them with ribbons in the Wildcat colors (black and teal). The boys were very appreciative and we didn't get tackled - which was a very good thing.

Here is more from the WRAL article about Bennett. I'll be sharing more about the Wildcats in another post.

Side note: The West Johnston marching band will be marching in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. They are awesome!!!

I love fall!

I love fall!! I love being able to open the windows and feel the chill in the air. Fall means fairs, football, pumpkins and sweet potatoes.

The NC State Fair will be in Raleigh next week. I'm not sure if we'll be heading up there or not. We are heading to West Johnston for Homecoming. We'll be making rice krispie footballs to take to the Wildcats. Jennifer and Matt made some for our nephew, Jacob's, birthday. They were very yummy!! Since I wasn't able to find anything I was looking for to make cupcakes (and be able to transport them safely), I decided to give this recipe a try. I only hope they turn out as yummy and as good as Jennifer's.

I love seeing pumpkins everywhere. Nothing means fall more than those bright orange pumpkins and mums sitting in yards and on front porches. There are some great pumpkin recipes out there to try including stew cooking in the pumpkin shell.

Then come the sweet potatoes. My sister-in-law, Colleen, let us know that the field behind her house had been picked. Meaning it's potato gleaning time. This afternoon Tom, the kids and I hit the field and were able to get some nice looking sweet potatoes. We'll be having baked sweet potatoes, sweet potato pie, biscuits, and of course sweet potato souffle. I make sweet potato souffle every Thanksgiving by request. I'll have fun checking out some new recipes to add to our favorites.

Jonesing for Success

The following article was posted on www.highschoolot.com (from WRAL -local news station) about the Wildcats and Bennett. I just had to put the whole article on here!

Jonesing for Success
West Johnston coach Bennett Jones calls out a play from the sideline.

By Tim Candon, HighSchoolOT.com editor
Updated at 8:08 p.m.

As the setting sun emerged from behind a solitary gray cloud over the West Johnston practice field, Bennett Jones’ shadow slowly stretched out and until it cast over most of his players on the Wildcats football team, who had taken a knee and huddled around their coach for his end-of-practice sermon.
Though he casts a small shadow now, in time, Jones’ shadow will hover over the entire West Johnston football program.
But time is what Jones and the Wildcats never had. After former coach Kwame Dixon’s sudden resignation in mid July, Jones was hired three days before the start of fall practice.

Remarkably, West Johnston was unfazed by the preseason turmoil and uncertainty. The Wildcats are 7-0, the only undefeated team in the Triangle. With a win over Clayton on Friday, the Greater Neuse River Conference title will still be theirs to lose. A win will also keep alive the Wildcats’ chances to finish the season undefeated and be one of the only unbeaten teams in the East heading into the postseason.

Jones spent the first two weeks of practice trying to remember everyone’s name and learning the offensive and defense schemes that were already in place. It took only one game, the Wildcats’ season-opening 41-14 win over Athens Drive, to make it clear to him that his team was capable of something special.

“That was huge in so many aspects,” Jones said. “For us to break out like we did and have a big win, to me it gave me some validity with the players. From then on out, it’s been we’re all in this together.”

The Wildcats had their best season in school history last fall. After going 1-3 in non conference play, they went 6-1 in the Greater Neuse, finishing second and qualifying for the 4-AA playoffs for the first time. They lost to Millbrook in the first round.

With more than 20 seniors returning, most players were ready for a breakout year in 2008.

But their season was seemingly scuttled before it got started. Citing personal reasons, Dixon resigned on July 16 after three seasons in Benson, just 16 days before the start of practice. Eric Pulling, the Wildcats defensive coordinator, was named the interim head coach while the school advertised the position.

“We were confused. We didn’t know what was going on,” said Mallie Umphrey, a senior wide receiver and defensive back. “We didn’t know what kind of coach we were going to get. We didn’t know what kind of offense we were going to run. That was real hard for us. Coach Dixon had been our coach since we came in.”

While confusion reigned amongst the players, the remaining coaches were left in the lurch, too.

Steve Pleasants, the offensive line coach who with four years at West Johnston is the longest-tenured coach on the staff, was on vacation in the Bahamas when Dixon resigned.

“I get back to my house and there’s three messages,” Pleasants said. “One’s from Kwame saying he’s resigned. One’s from coach Pulling telling me what’s going on and then one from a parent asking what’s going on. It was just a very strange situation, but we all seemed to pick up and just keep going.”

Just a few miles north of Benson, Jones was preparing for the upcoming season at Clayton, where he had been defensive coordinator for six years. When word reached Gary Fowler, the Comets head coach for the last 23 years, that West Johnston was looking for a new head coach quickly, he thought of Jones.

Jones was the head coach at Wilson Beddingfield, his alma mater, during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. He went 10-11 overall. In 2001, the Bruins went 6-4, their first winning season in five years, but Jones was let go at the end of the academic year.

From Beddingfield, he went to Clayton. As time wore on, Jones settled in and was prepared to remain working with the Comets and perhaps succeed Fowler after he retires.

After six years under Fowler, Jones felt he’d learned how to run a program, something he wasn’t prepared for in Wilson when he got the job at age 26.

“I think when I got the job at Beddingfield, I was so young, I just focused on the football aspect and didn’t understand all the other responsibilities that come along with it — dealing with the press, dealing with officials, weight training — and Gary helped prepare me in terms of managing a program,” said Jones, 34.

The more he learned about the situation in Benson, the more he wanted the job.

But the interview process included a wrinkle that initially gave him pause. West principal Brookie Honeycutt promised the West Johnston seniors their input would be a factor in who was hired. Jones had to go before about a dozen seniors and sell himself to them.

Or so he thought.

“Actually they sold themselves to me,” Jones said. “I knew after leaving there, this is where I wanted to be because it impressed me that 13 or 14 or 15 seniors cared enough to come out in the summer time at 1 o’clock in the afternoon and sit in their school and try to talk to the people that wanted to be their coach. It showed me that they cared just as much about the program as I would coming in to lead it. It was a great process that validated for me I wanted to be here.”

What impressed the players so much was that Jones didn’t stand before them and tell them how they would have to adjust to him. He walked in to the room, pulled up a chair, sat down and talked to them about how he wanted to be their coach, how he was going to catch up with that they were doing, how he didn’t have any plans to change what they did on the field.

“He talked a good game,” said senior defensive back Devon Henderson. “I’m glad we got him.”

To Fowler, the Clayton head coach, Jones' communication skills are precisely what's allowed the Wildcats to regroup from the preseason chaos and come together.

“When you talk about one that can really communicate with the players, he’s always been good at that. That’s probably his biggest asset,” Fowler said. “He knows football, but he knows how to motivate.… As long as they know you care about them, they’ll play hard for you. That’s what coaching’s all about."

By doing more of the same, the Wildcats have thrived on both sides of the ball. They’re averaging 437 yards of offense and 36 points per game. Senior quarterback Lincoln Morton, a Harnett Central transfer, has completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,423 yards and 18 touchdowns. Junior running back C.J. Frederick has run for 1,137 yards and 10 touchdowns. Defensively, West is holding teams to about 20 points per game and 250 yards.

While the coaching switch didn’t change what the Wildcats did on the field, it did change what they did off of it. Jones had the locker rooms repainted, he reorganized the weight room, he purchased new practice shorts and practice jerseys. He instituted a dress code (no earrings, no hats in the building, no sagging pants) and a code of ethics.

Part of what Jones learned from Fowler was the importance of the community to the football program, and he expects his players to reciprocate. This week, every player was required to go out in the community and do something nice for someone else, such as carry someone’s groceries to their car or offer to cut someone’s grass. They were also required to do perform a similarly selfless task for someone at school.

Jones has done all that as a way for his players to take pride and ownership of their program.

And it has worked.
“He’s trying to make everyone a better person instead of just football,” Henderson said. “I think it’s good.”

Jones gets the credit for what West has done this season, but he’s quick to remind anyone that Dixon, and his predecessor Charles Bradshaw, deserve praise, too.

“Kwame deserves a lot of credit for building the foundation of the program,” Jones said. “Both of the head coaches that have preceded me here at the school, I think both did very good jobs in the situation they were in. What I tried to do is come in and enhance what was here.”

Just when everything seemed to come together, one incident shook the team. Last week against East Wake, offensive guard Stephen King was thrown off the team for punching Pleasants several times late in the first half. King’s brother, James, lay on the field with a knee injury and Stephen was shouting at one of the officials near the West sideline, Jones said. Pleasants grabbed Stephen King by the shoulder pads to pull him off the field, and as King was turned around, he threw several punches at Pleasants. Jones immediately threw him off the team, and King was escorted out of the stadium by the Johnston County sheriff’s department.

“It was a situation where one player simply lost his cool and made a very poor decision,” Jones said. “The assistant coach did nothing wrong. All the assistant coach did was try to get a player off the field so that he wouldn’t get ejected. And the player responded in a way none of us are proud of. … And it’s a shame because at the heart, he is a good-natured kid that simply lost his cool. One thing I’ve tried to impress on them — and he showed it clearly — it doesn’t take but one small mistake before all this can be gone. It’s unfortunate for him, for our team, but I believe a true program is bigger than any one individual, including myself.”

The Wildcats, as they’ve done before, handled the adversity and went on to a 21-14 win. Things don’t get any easier this week when the Wildcats play, of all teams, Clayton.

Not only is Jones squaring off against his mentor and former team, not only is it a Johnston County rivalry game, not only is it the midpoint of the conference season, not only is it homecoming, but a win would allow West Johnston to set a new school record for wins in a season.

“I respect and admire so much of what coach Fowler has done at Clayton and the kind of program he has established and the people that are over there and way the entire community supports that school,” Jones said. “It’ll definitely be special. At the same time, it’s an opportunity for our school to prove itself again, to set a new school record for wins, to keep the unbeaten season going and more importantly, to set the pace in the Greater Neuse River Conference. On many levels, it’s special. It’ll definitely be emotional at the start for me more so than the kids, but once the ball gets kicked off, it’s just another game.”

Back at practice, Jones has finished his monologue. The sun has dipped below the tree line, darkness is setting in and there are no shadows anywhere on the field as players and coaches trudge off to the locker room.

In a way, that’s how it should be. No one’s shadow looms over anyone or anything. As Jones said, no one, including himself, is bigger than the program. In order for success to continue, the Wildcats won’t have it any other way.

“If we do this right, it well keep on going regardless of who’s here, regardless of what team it is, what year it is,” Jones said. “A program is something that is there year in and year out. The working pieces may change, but the product remains the same. That’s what we’re trying to establish here.”
